Calorie Estimation - Big Meals Lead to Big Mistakes

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Pat Salber How good are we at estimating the number of calories in the foods we eat? It turns out, if the meal is small, we are pretty good. But if the meal is large, we grossly underestimate the number of calories it contains. Brian Wansink and Pierre Chandon, PhDs from New York and France respectively, designed two studies to look at how accurately people estimate the number of calories in fast food meals. They were also interested in whether overweight individuals differed from normal weight individuals in their ability to estimate calories in meals. The results are reported in an article, Meal Size, Not Body Size, Explains Errors in Estimating the Calorie Content of Meals, that appears in the September 2006 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine. In Study 1, the researchers sent trained interviewers to local fast-food restaurants. They asked 150 men and women who had just finished eating to estimate the number of calories in their meals and to provide their heights and weights. 105 people agreed to participate. A little more than half of the participants (59%) were normal weight (BMI less than 25). The rest were overweight. Men and womens estimates of meal calories were similar as were estimates of normal and overweight individuals. What was significantly different was the calorie underestimation of different size meals. People underestimated small meals by an average of about 3%. However, they underestimated big meals by 38%. In the second Study, the researchers asked 40 undergraduate students to estimate the number of calories in 15 different meals purchased from a local fast food restaurant. Each meal consisted of three items (chicken nuggets, French fries, and a regular cola drink). What differed was the portion size of each item. The smallest meal consisted of 3 nuggets, a small (1.45 oz) order of fries and a 10 oz cola. The largest meal was 12 nuggets, 5.8 oz of fries, and a 40 oz cola. The rest of the meals were different combinations of the different portion sizes of the same items. The meals ranged from 445 calories to a whopping 1780 calories. Similar to Study 1, they found that the undergrads were very good at estimating calories of the small meals, but they underestimated the 7 largest meals by a mean of 23%. Again, there was no difference between normal and overweight people in their ability to estimate calories. Now here is the punch line: Although normal and overweight individuals were similar in their ability to estimate the number of calories in food, the overweight individuals in Study 1, who had eaten a fast food meal, ate larger meals. Because everyone significantly underestimates the number of calories in large meals, these overweight people actually ate many more calories than they thought they had. An analysis of the data in these two studies showed a meal that increased in calories by 100%, was only thought, by the participants, to have increased by 50%. Whew, thats a big mistake that can really impact the bottom line aka the waistline. The authors had several suggestions on ways to improve an individuals ability to estimate calories. One was to have fast food restaurants clearly post calorie content on the meal servings themselves, as opposed to just being available somewhere in the restaurant or on the companys website. Another was to provide people with an idea of what a portion-size should be (e.g., 3 chicken nuggets or an amount of fries equal to the size of your fist). An interesting option they propose takes advantage of what they learned from the data in this study. Since people can accurately estimate the calories in small amounts of food, they should estimate the amount of calories in a large meal by estimating the calories in each item (chicken nuggets, fries, cola) and then adding them up to get the total. Whether this works or not, of course, will have to be tested. But if it does, it will be one more tool that we can use to help us ensure that our daily calorie intake stays in a range that allows us to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Brazilian Waxing - Is It For You?

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Mike Jones The terms ‘Brazilian Waxing’ and ‘Hollywood Waxing’ are often used interchangeably to refer to hair removal in the genital area. Specifically the term ‘Brazilian Waxing’ refers to partial genital hair removal, often leaving a strip of hair, whereas ‘Hollywood Waxing’ refers to total genital hair removal. The term ‘Brazilian Waxing’ as used in this article refers to either total or partial genital hair removal. Genital hair removal includes hair removal around the anus, perineum and vagina. Prices at beauty salons may range anywhere from $25 to $100 or more. Many have all the hair removed. Some prefer to leave a tiny strip of closely-shorn hair in the front. It is now common for men as well as women to ask for Brazilian Waxing. Tips When Visiting A Salon For Brazilian Waxing After underwear is removed a beautician asks the client to lie down and raise the legs. Talc may be sprinkled all over the bottom, anus and vagina areas. Hot wax is then spread over all these areas and then ripped off with cotton strips. A good way of finding a professional in Brazilian waxing is to ask through friends or at your local beauty parlor. It is better not to just take ‘pot luck’ by checking out the yellow pages. Aestheticians who do Brazilian waxing see every part of you and many feel much less embarrassed with a professional. Professionals will minimize the number of repeat applications over the same spot. Those not so skilled will go over and over the same area thus prolonging the pain or discomfort. An experienced aesthetician will pull off the wax in a clean, fast movement. A less experienced one may hesitate causing more pain. As the client is asked to spread their legs in various embarrassing positions, acting in a matter of fact way, treating it as normal, will help a person feel a little less self-conscious. Remember, that’s how the aesthetician views it. Check out the salon beforehand to make sure it is hygienic and that the aesthetician is licensed. The license is normally displayed. Check that fresh bed covering is used for each client and that the waxing supplies are sanitized and disposed of in a hygienic way after use. Make sure your appointment is at least one week after a period so the skin is not so sensitive. Make sure the hair is trimmed to about 1/8th of an inch. It should be free from oils and lotion to make hair removal easier. Don’t rush the appointment. Allow plenty of time, at least one hour. The pain can be reduced by using an antiseptic preparation in advance. Also, following up with a soothing lotion containing Aloe Vera or Calamine Lotion can reduce the itching and discomfort. Why Is Brazilian Waxing So Popular? Many just enjoy the clean feeling that comes with being hairless. Some who did it just to wear a bikini now keep it up because “it just feels great”! Recommendation: As Brazilian waxing involves some discomfort, always follow up with a hair inhibitor. Besides being kind to the skin and suitable for the most sensitive areas of the body, the inhibitors significantly reduce hair growth so Brazilian waxing sessions are much less frequent. The Metabolic Syndrome

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By John D Zelem, MD Do you find yourself having trouble losing weight even with exercise and, for all intents and purposes, watching what you eat? I suspect that you have been told to eat a low fat, high carbohydrate diet and you have done that. So why is there still a problem? You probably have thought of every possible reason for your lack of success. You may have thought that your thyroid gland is not working properly or your metabolism has slowed down: probably not. Possibly your hormone levels are off or maybe you need to step up your exercise program, or maybe you need one of these more dramatic diets to go on: not likely. That sounded like me and how I was thinking. Normal Energy Production And Storage You may or may not have been aware of something called The Metabolic Syndrome. What is it, you may ask? Allow me to give you a little background of basic information before I define this syndrome. Our bodies need fuel for energy just like any machine. Sugar is that source. We need to get down to the cellular level where this energy production actually occurs. Glucose is the sugar utilized by the cell for the production of energy in the furnaces of our cells, which are called mitochondria. The entry of glucose into the cells is facilitated by the hormone insulin, which is produced in the pancreas. This hormone also will drive glucose into muscle and the liver for storage in a more complex form called glycogen. This will be used as a source of energy at other times such as periods of starvation and exercise. Any amounts over and above normal usage for immediate energy and storage in liver and muscle are sent to fat cells for greater storage of energy sources. There is an opposing hormone, glucagon, which is also produced in the pancreas and is responsible for releasing fat for energy when stimulated by the intake of protein. The intake of carbohydrates and excessive levels of insulin suppress it. Normally these hormones work in conjunction with each other maintaining a balanced situation of energy substrates utilization and storage. Situations such as dieting, starvation, exercise and the Metabolic Syndrome will alter this balance. Glycemic Index Whenever we ingest sugar or carbohydrates our bodies react with a rise in the blood sugar inducing the secretion of insulin to get the sugar into our cells and produce energy and store the excess in muscle, the liver, and eventually, fat. The Glycemic Index is a measurement of the rate of the rise of blood sugar following the ingestion of a particular test food relative to that of a standard food such as glucose. The measurement for glucose is 100. This index will quantitate the rate of secretion of insulin. Under 55 is generally considered to be a low-glycemic food and over 70 is high-glycemic. Low GI = 55 or lessMedium GI = 56 - 69 High GI = 70 or more Our diet today is mainly composed of over-processed carbohydrates in the form of our modern-day flour. This flour is the result of removing all of its complex components, leaving us with a pure, super-fine white powder that, when ingested, causes our blood sugar to rise rapidly to higher than normal levels. This leads to an exaggerated insulin response. This rapid rise in insulin will cause blood sugar levels to drop precipitously to relatively low levels, lower than normal, causing drowsiness, and fatigue. The subsequent rebound also results in a desire to eat again to restore blood sugar levels. Long term this becomes an uncontrollable craving for carbohydrates. This roller coaster effect occurring over and over, leads to carbohydrate addiction, carbohydrate craving, nighttime eating, insulin resistance, and the beginning of the Metabolic Syndrome. These high insulin levels also shut off the glucagon response and leave no way that fat can be utilized as a source of energy. This is when weight gain occurs and weight loss becomes almost impossible. Eventually, this syndrome will cause inflammation and narrowing of the small arteries going to the muscles of your body causing them to constrict. This leads to a decreased ability of insulin to deliver glucose to the muscles for use and storage. Insulin levels will then increase significantly to try and accomplish this task but, eventually, most of the glucose will be diverted to fat cells causing what is called insulin resistance. Glucagon is totally shut off at this point. Some of the other effects of the Metabolic Syndrome are high blood pressure, increased triglyceride and cholesterol levels, and decreased HDL, all leading to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This Syndrome has been said to occur in about 20-25% of the population. A significant portion of this group will go from insulin resistance to full blown Diabetes as the Metabolic Syndrome causes a burn-out of the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. This is also one of the reasons why we are seeing a lot more obesity and diabetes, especially in our young. It is getting to epidemic proportions. Low-Glycemic Response There is hope! There is an answer. It is called a low glycemic diet. This must be considered a lifestyle change, not a temporary eating habit. Traditional diets do not work because they are designed to be an acute solution to a chronic problem. Also the faster one loses weight, generally, the faster it comes back. The chances of losing up to 10% of your total body weight and keeping it off for 5 years is the same as the 5 year survival rate for cancer of the lung, 5%. This is a very sobering statistic. You will find that it may, and should, take 18-24 months for you to achieve your end results. You should set short-term goals along the way. I have actually chosen to let my body decide what its end-point will be and take as long as it needs to get there since my program also involves exercising, which yours should too. You need to understand that this syndrome is reversible with time while the alternative of not making this change is diabetes, which is never reversible. Remember, if you continue to do what you have always done, you will continue to get what you have always gotten. When an individual eats a low-glycemic meal there is a totally different metabolic response. Eating foods such as fruits, vegetables, good carbs that do not cause a rapid rise of your blood sugar, good protein and fat is the answer. The whites are out: the white breads, the white potato, and the white rice. Even most whole wheat bread is not our friend. It cannot be enriched wheat flour; it must be stone ground. These types of carbs will allow a slow rise of blood sugar, leading to a more modest release of insulin balanced with a proper release of glucagon. The insulin encourages the muscle to take up the sugar and the rest goes to the liver and fat. On the other hand, glucagon is also present in normal levels and will break down the fat, at about the same rate it is created, initially at a greater rate. The result of this equation is no weight gain or possible weight loss. Even if you have the Metabolic Syndrome, the start of a low glycemic lifestyle, not diet, may allow a reversal of all of the bad effects of this syndrome. Eventually, exercise must become a part of this healthy lifestyle. Conclusions So how do we summarize this complex bit of information and put it into a useful tool that is easy to follow. First of all, how badly do you want the results, the goals that you set? If the goal is important enough the work will follow and you will accomplish it. Remember that the Metabolic Syndrome is reversible with time, and Diabetes is never reversible. Here are some general guidelines to follow. Low glycemic food will not raise your blood sugar as high and as rapidly as high glycemic foods will and, at the same time, will start to increase your bodys sensitivity to insulin. Low glycemic diets will help you to lose weight, help those who already have diabetes maintain better control of their blood sugar. Low glycemic foods will help you to stay full longer. Finally, high glycemic foods may replenish carbohydrate stores after exercise but low glycemic foods will improve physical endurance. Foods that have a low glycemic index generally had a low glycemic load. Eliminate foods with both high glycemic indexes and high glycemic loads. Optimize your insulin levels by eating fruits and vegetables and whole grains. The fiber in these foods will both be healthy and release sugar into your bloodstream slowly. I want to reiterate for you that I have changed my lifestyle to low-glycemic index, low glycemic load and have seen a significant change in myself. I am not hungry all the time anymore. I am free of carbohydrate addiction and cravings. I can actually sit in front of the TV at night or read a book and not have a high-glycemic snack next to me. I have not been doing it long enough to get off all of my meds but I see that in the near future and I recently was able to reduce my high blood pressure medication. Remember, getting healthy is a process and this is just one of the steps. It is not about what has happened to me, but I do know this can work for you. I am not saying that this is the lifestyle change that you have to make, but if you see yourself in a similar situation, take a good look. Obviously you will need to discuss this with your doctor and see if it is a fit for you. You should also work out a program with your personal physician to regularly check your labs, weight, and blood pressure. Remember, if you continue doing what you are doing, you will continue to have what you have. If you want to make some changes in your life, you must make some changes in your life. I wish you success and good health. Dr Zelem is the author of the book “The Process of Becoming Healthy” contains a detailed explanation of this syndrome and is available for seminars. Weight Loss Through Low Carb Diet

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Roy Chan Are you or your family members amongst the 65%? To help with weight issues and for overall improved health, many people turn to diets. In fact, government statistics show that while about 65 percent of Americans are overweight, 38 percent are actually doing something about it. And according to a recent survey by the National Health Institute, about a third of overweight Americans who are trying to lose weight, are doing so by eating less carbohydrates (carbs) largely because of the increased popularity of fad diets like Atkins Diet and the South Beach Diet. Although there have certainly been other low-carb or low-sugar diet plans before, and more will most assuredly come out in the years ahead, lets take a look at the basics behind many of the major plans. And lets take a look at how they fit into the real world today. Because while it might be great to lower the bodys sugar content and be healthier, wouldnt it be great to learn how to do so while being part of this fast-paced world? In the world of instant messaging, quick Internet interaction and the already multi-faceted day-to-day hectic schedules, dietary food budgeting, planning, preparing and shopping are issues that can become major sources of stress and reasons for dieting failure. Dual income families on-the-go and other super-busy wage earners and dieters often already suffer from more than their share of everyday stressors like fears of being laid off, their jobs being relocated or terminated, juggling more than one job, dependents (both elderly and minors) and trying to fund and juggle continuing education into their lives, budgets, and daily routines. People want and need simpler solutions. And they need simpler dieting plans. Forget spending mega bucks on gourmet, hard-to-find items. Forget spending hours just to prepare meals. And forget counting, measuring, and weighing ingredients. Either a low-carb plan fit into real-world lives, or it doesnt. First well take a look at some basic terms and definitions to help understand the science behind low-carb plans. Lets see how many of the major players plans measure up. Halloween: Places to Be, and Places to Avoid

Friday, August 24th, 2007

By Peter Koonz This year for Halloween may be a little different for you. Perhaps this is the first year your child is old enough to be out for the holiday, or perhaps you’ve decided to shake things up a little and now you just need to decide what to do differently. Things have certainly changed quite a bit from when you were the kid going out on the town to trick-or-treat. Now there is much more awareness about the dangers of going out to people’s homes as once was the custom. So it should come as no surprise that you are going to be looking in very different directions for places to go with your kids this Halloween. If, for this Halloween, you’ve decided to go with your kids, you can consider a little trick-or-treating through neighborhoods. Make sure they are well-lit areas with which you are familiar. It’s even better if you can group together with a friend’s kids. The more of you there are, the more fun it should be, and the safer too. It is very important that you avoid areas of town where the lights are not bright enough. Look also for clues such as very few people out on the road, especially if you see no kids. Those areas won’t be fun anyway, so stay away. Parties are fun to take your children to. There are a lot of options for this. Take your kids to a party at a friend’s house, or at the community or civic center in your area. These are great options and are very safe. The more people who bring their kids to the party, the more likely it is that there will be law enforcement nearby to ensure everyone has a safe and happy Halloween. Another fun option for you to consider is a hay ride. Kids absolutely love these, and they are commonly part of a much bigger event. Locations where you can call to find out what’s going on are numerous. Often, your child’s school will probably have good information on where the fun will be. Fire departments in some communities host events for Halloween. So do police departments. Call these, and even call the local Chamber of Commerce. These are all excellent community resources that will lead you in the direction of good, safe fun for your children. The one thing you don’t want to do is send them to a place where you know nothing about the hosts. Trust is not something you should toss out on this holiday. Regardless of where you and your children spend this Halloween, the one thing that is at the front of your mind, even more important than fun, is safety. That’s why costumes should be bright, attractive, and noticeable. Make sure that your child’s costume is going to make him or her easy to locate. One good idea for a girl is a fairy costume. With a bright, colorful fairy dress and brilliant butterfly fairy wings, your daughter will be easy to find in any crowd. Take a look and you’ll agree that these are the costumes your child will appreciate for their appearance, and you can appreciate for reasons even more important. Get Hired Faster By Changing Your Job Search Strategy

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Gary Hawkins According to most experts, the average job search takes about five months to complete. Five months is a long time to spend job searching, especially if you are currently out of work! Why does the average job search take this long? One of the primary reasons is because most job seekers are using the exact same job search strategies. Most of them are using what could be called the wait and hope strategy. The wait and hope strategy is comprised of three primary steps. 1- Search for jobs which are being advertised 2- Submit a resume for selected jobs 3- WAIT AND HOPE for an interview This is the primary strategy used because this is the way we were all taught to look for jobs. A Better Job Search Strategy Most people are not aware that only twenty percent of all vacant jobs are actually filled through advertising. This fact is a real eye opener for most people. If only twenty percent of jobs are filled through advertising, that leaves an overwhelming majority of eighty percent which are filled without advertising. If a job is not advertised, how is it ever filled? They are filled through the hidden job market! What exactly is the hidden job market? These are the jobs that are hidden from public view. For the job seekers who only look for jobs through the classifieds or online advertising, they are completely left out of consideration for these jobs. Considering that eighty percent of jobs are filled this way, they miss out on the majority of jobs that are actually available. This is great news for the job seeker who is willing to learn how to tap into the hidden job market! Five Easy Steps You can tap into the hidden job market in five easy steps. Here is a short description of each step. Step 1 - Develop A Target List Of Employers The first thing you need to do is to develop a list of employers who have the type of job(s) you are interested in, in the locations you want, and are employers you would like to work for. I call this list of potential employers your job opportunity list. This list of potential employers can be very long, or quite short depending on your interests and needs. Step 2- Do Some Research Once you have your job opportunity list together, use the Internet to do a little research on each potential employer. Use the companys web site to read about the company, it’s mission, it’s products, any current news, and most importantly, find a company directory. Use the directory to find out who is the director or supervisor of the department you want to be hired into. Step 3- Look For Advertised Jobs No, I haven’t changed my mind. Advertised jobs should not be your primary means of finding your next job, but you should still spend a little time and see what types of jobs are being advertised in your area. Pay special attention to jobs advertised by companies on your job opportunity list. Step 4- Start Making Contacts This is where you can start separating yourself from the competition. Most job seekers just won’t make direct contact with potential employers. They are not comfortable applying for a job unless the potential employer has put up a big blinking sign (advertisement) that says, We have a job opening, please send us your resume. Make direct contact with the employers and let them know about you, your qualifications and experience, and your interest in working for their organization! Step 5- Be Persistent And Follow Up Once you are making contacts and sending out resumes, you must be determined to follow up. Just sending out a resume and hoping for an interview won’t get you hired faster than your competition. Have a consistent habit of following up with decision makers after a couple of days have passed. You are NOT being pushy by doing this, you are being persistent Summary As you can see, this is not rocket science, but it really does work. Tapping into the hidden job market will put you ahead of ninety-five percent of your job search competitors. Dont ever hesitate to make direct contact with employers. Employers like to use the hidden job market because it is much cheaper and faster to fill jobs this way. Gary Hawkins is a Human Resources Specialist and entrepreneur. What Does It Take to Get Someone to Respond?

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Deb Daufeldt You want to “turn-up” your marketing efforts. You know the basics about your target customers and prospects… at least their names and postal- or e-mail addresses. You put together an email piece to your new opted-in list of current customers and prospects. You fine tune the heck out of it and, at last, off she goes into the world like a glorious golden boomerang, returning with happy customers eager to buy!… … … OK, days go by and your phone isnt ring off the hook. Customers arent breaking down your door. One lady did stop in to point out the typo in the mailing however. Your mailing is a total failure… or is it? Relationships take hard work… and patience. Results don’t just happen. Every business needs to establish a dialog with its customers, one which solidifies its credibility, relevancy, and value within the confines of its marketing efforts. Of course, this differs from company to company and industry to industry. Each business needs to find the customer touch points that are hot for them and communicate these points in some way in every contact… every communication… until its brand equity has built to “critical mass” in the mind of that customer to where they think “Hey, I get it! I need to do business with those guys.” How many times does a business need to reach out to their target market before they are really trusted? Studies have shown that what used to take on average 3-5 “touches” now takes 7-9. Why is this? Think about the growing message “clutter” we sift through every day via postal mail, email, television, radio, billboards, etc. It is simply overwhelming to most people. So how do we cut through all that clutter? One solution is to increase the number of times you touch each prospect. A touch could be an email, a post card, a phone call, a letter or in-store attention. Each time you touch the prospect you build rapport. People do business with people they like and trust. If you increase your touches you will increase your sales. Of course simply “touching” them is not enough - the more these touches are relevant, timely, and personalized, the more effective they will be. A Denver-based airline regularly sends emails to me with their last-minute specials. But why do they waste my time… and their money… telling me about a special that flies from Detroit to Chicago when they know that I live in DENVER?! It should be a simple, reasonable assumption that if the flight doesnt originate in Denver, where they know I live, Im not likely to be able to take advantage of it. This message is not relevant to me. So why should I bother to receive their messages if they clearly dont think enough of me or my time to offer a dialog that is of value to me? Know your audience. Leverage what you know about them and never stop trying to gather more information. Dont waste those valuable opportunities by filling up their mail boxes with anything that isnt RELEVANT, PERSONALIZED, and TIMELY. Dont expect immediate results. Depending of the interest levels of your audience, response can take time. Consider the world-at-large, economic factors and the competition. If the economy is strong - people may be more apt to buy. If your competition is accused of bad business practices - it could reflect badly on your industry as a whole. Everything impacts everything else in some way… and it can all show up on your response rates. Your task as a smart marketer is NOT to target response rates initially - but to target the nurturing of top-of-mind, positive predisposition to each and every prospect out there to have a good impression of you and your business so that when they need what you offer… you will be the first one they think of. Focus efforts on gathering information and then using it to build a knowledge-base of valuable nuggets about each and every customer and prospect - then apply that knowledge to better target information to deliver value to them. By getting the most out of every customer touch point, the positive results will follow. Creative & Unique Date Ideas

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Ron Zvagelsky If you want to really impress your date, come up with some unique date ideas. Of course, what you can do on a date is somewhat limited to your geographical area, but no matter where you are there is something fun and new to try. Have you ever gone geocaching? Geocaching is a type of treasure hunt game. You would need to buy or borrow a GPS unit and check out the geocaching website. All you need to do is input the coordinates into your GPS and you are off to find the location. This is a great date idea for a Saturday afternoon. It is fun and will create a sense of bonding as the two of you work together to find the hidden box. There are geocaches hidden throughout the entire world. You will be surprised how many are in your neighborhood. Does your local area offer classes such as pottery, cake decorating or cooking? Try taking one of those with your date, followed by coffee or dessert. Again, it is something special that you two will share together and even if your pottery falls apart, it will make a funny memory for the two of you in the future. Do you live in a large city? Pretend you are a tourist and take a tour bus or walking tour around the city. You will probably be surprised at how much you find out about the things you see everyday. Casinos can also make fun dates and arent just for gambling anymore. Sure, you can gamble if you would like, but most casinos offer live music and dancing. Sometimes they even have areas for concerts. Best of all, most casinos are open all night so this is great if you work late or are just having a really good date and dont want it to stop! One new idea that is spreading across the country is what is nicknamed Adult Chuck E. Cheese. These operations are large buildings which have video games, pool tables, air hockey and lots more. They are stylishly designed and have full dinner options plus bar service. What a great way to release your inner child and have some fun with your date, without having to wait your turn to play pinball behind a group of seven year olds! Unique dates are great ways to make memories with your special someone. Ron Zvagelsky has a degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California. What to be Successful? Marketing Makes the Difference

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By John Follis When you hear the word marketing what comes to mind? More business or wasted money? If your experience with marketing or advertising has been less than positive your cynicism may be well founded. Yet, have you ever noticed a competitor with a mediocre product and a healthy business? The difference is often marketing. Some say theyve never done marketing and dont need to because of good word- of-mouth. Positive word-of-mouth is great, but not enough if youre serious about growing your business. Others do invest in marketing yet treat it as a necessary evil. The problem with that mindset is that its driving with the brakes on. Those people sabotage their efforts by making poor decisions, taking half-measures and often resisting anything innovative. When asked about the one big key to marketing success I reply that theres nothing more important than a marketing mindset. A marketing mindset is an attitude, a way of thinking, that values and embraces the power of marketing. If you look at the companies and brands that are most successful — Nike, Microsoft, Virgin, Trump, Saturn, Kenneth Cole, etc — youll find someone at the top with a marketing mindset. People like Trump, Cole, and Virgins Richard Branson may have it instinctively. For most, however, its a learned attribute. So, if you dont have a marketing mindset yet, keep reading and start to get one. Follis Fact #1 You need a Marketing Mindset. Attracting vs. Chasing A guy sees a beautiful woman in a bar, tracks down her name and number, calls her up and says, “Hi, my name is Joe and Im great in bed.” Thats cold calling. Another guy sees a beautiful woman in a bar and gives her a napkin that says, “Im Bill and Im great in bed.” Thats direct marketing. A third guy sees a beautiful woman in a bar, has his ex-girlfriend go up to her and say, “See that cute guy over there? Hes my ex, his name is Tom, and hes really great in bed.” Thats PR. Last guy walks into a bar, a beautiful woman approaches him and says, “Hi, my name is Courtney and I hear youre really great in bed.” Thats effective marketing. Attraction is the essence of marketing. When you create enough desire to get your prospect to come to you, theyll always be more predisposed to buying. That bares repeating. When you create enough desire to get your prospect to come to you, theyll always be more predisposed to buying. The challenge, of course, is that your prospect is elusive prey. So, imagine the first rabbit hunters. Theyd exhaust themselves using spears and rocks until a more evolved Neanderthal got the idea of using carrots. Or, imagine the girl who desperately wants a date, but cant understand why she scares guys away when she chases them. Unfortunately, too many businesses act like that girl chasing for a date by putting lots into selling and nothing into marketing. Follis Fact #2 Its always better to attract than chase. Expense vs Investment Those who dont understand marketing view it as an expense. Those with a marketing mindset know its an investment. They know that, if done right, it can excite their prospects and produce a great return. Done right means well- researched, well-managed, and generally handled by someone who knows what theyre doing. Regarding expense, being a small business is a bad excuse to do nothing. Start small, but do something. There are plenty of cost-effective, non- traditional ways to do a test. So, if you want to grow, you cant afford not to develop a marketing plan. Determine your Objective and Budget Like building a house it starts with a solid foundation. Start with a clear objective. The more specific you make it, the better you can develop an effective plan to achieve it. If your company has no marketing director to create a plan, get help. A marketing plan is critical and it involves the analysis of key market factors such as: the nature and traits of your product. the exact audience youre targeting. the competitive environment. the traits of your industry/category. the maturity of your business. timing. Your marketing budget depends upon the analysis of these factors as well as your short and long term objectives. For some businesses, 5% of annual sales is plenty to invest. For others, 10% may not be enough. Once the marketing goal is determined it’s easier to determine the budget needed to achieve it. Have a Great Product At the risk of stating the obvious, a big key for marketing success is having a great product. In his best-selling book, Purple Cow, marketing guru Seth Godin calls it, “being remarkable.” Its about having a product or service thats exceptional. Though many non-remarkable products may seem to do well because of great marketing, no long-term success can be achieved without a great product. In fact, if a product is not great, great marketing will usually make it fail faster. People will buy it, not like it, and never buy it again. Case in point: Ever see an exciting teaser for an upcoming movie? It can make a lot of people run out and buy a ticket. The problem starts a couple of weeks later when folks see the movie, hate it, and then spread the word. Before you know it, the movies gone. Heres another case. Remember New Coke? If not, youre not alone. It didnt last long. Despite the marketing muscle that Coke put behind it, the Coke- drinking public decided they were quite happy with the old Coke. Another case involves a new tropical hotel. Eager to jump-start his business the owner got tour directors and travel writers to check it out and hopefully generate some good buzz. Problem was, the hotel wasnt finished. Had he waited a couple more months he wouldve gotten great reviews. Now hell be lucky if those tour directors and writers give him another shot. If businesses spent less energy trying to sell their product and more on improving it, theyd have more success in the long run. Follis Fact #3 Great marketing will make a bad product fail faster. When product, client, and marketing are all exceptional the results can be a beautiful thing — even if it doesnt start off that way. “Let me get this straight…you want my commercial to start with my competitor’s tagline?” That was the company president’s response when I presented the concept. I guess I couldn’t blame him. Recommending that he put $350,000 behind a TV spot that began with his main competitors tagline may not have seemed like the smartest idea. Yet, I knew my concept was strong — if I could articulate it. But, before I continue, let me step back and explain the scenario. Sorrell Ridge Fruit Spreads was an unknown all-natural spreadable fruit” product (ie. jam) that had been selling in health food stores. Now, the tiny brand was ready to battle the big guys on the grocery shelves of America. The main competitor and undisputed leader in the category was Smucker’s. Smucker’s had a 30-year history during which it built one of the strongest, most positive brand images in history. Their tagline, “With a name like Smucker’s it has to be good”, was famous and endeared by the American public. What’s more, their ad budget was about 20 times that of tiny Sorrell Ridge. To say we needed a kick-ass campaign is an understatement. But Smucker’s was vulnerable. Their preserves were mostly high fructose corn syrup, refined sugar, and little fruit. Sorrell Ridge, on the other hand, was all fruit. It was a big competitive difference and the stage was set for a classic David vs. Goliath battle. So, back to our meeting… “You want my commercial to start with my competitor’s tagline?” “The idea here isn’t to promote Smucker’s tagline, it’s to dismantle it,” I replied passionately. The president’s eyebrows raised. I then walked him through the simple 30-second TV spot which opened with the Smucker’s tagline filling the screen… With a name like Smucker’s it has to be good. The announcer began: “For 30 years Smucker’s has been telling us they have to be good. But in fact, Smucker’s Preserves is mostly corn syrup, refined sugar, and only some fruit.” At the mention of each ingredient a pair of hands popped up from the bottom of the TV screen and patched over the last line of type, “it has to be good,” with a succession of modifications starting with “it’s probably good”, to “it might be good,” and finally, “is it really so good?” We then cut to the Sorrell Ridge jar as the announcer explained that “Sorrell Ridge is 100% fruit.” The final stake in the heart was our tagline which played directly off Smucker’s: Sorrell Ridge. With 100% fruit, it has to be better. Holding my breath, I glance over at the Sorrell Ridge president who now looked like a kid on Christmas morning. I then presented a “50 cents off” coupon ad with side- by-side visuals of each jar positioned under their respective tagline. Like the TV, it was simple, but compelling, and he loved it. But now came the legal questions. Could we even do it? After some nail-biting delays, and a few minor copy changes, the lawyers gave us the green light. But not without stern warnings that there was no guarantee that Smucker’s wouldn’t sue. To the president’s credit, he pulled the trigger on the campaign and we held our breath. We didn’t have to hold it long. Sales spiked and within the month were up a full 90%. Our thrilled client immediately doubled his media spending by scraping together every dime he could muster. When the dust finally settled 12 months later, Sorrell Ridge had a 50% national increase while sales for the entire jams category increased only 3.5%. The Harvard Business Review wrote it up as a case study and Forbes wrote it up as a 2-page feature. My partner and I got covered in a dozen trade publications and appeared live on CNBC. And, despite all our legal fears, Smucker’s never did take action. Everything we said was true and obviously Smucker’s knew it. Though they probably couldve tied us up in court, the last thing they needed was more press. We simply had a better product and we got the message across in an exciting way. Tips For Becoming Fluent In The Non-Verbal Language Of Dating

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Toni Coleman We are all too familiar with the term “body language”. There have been books, workshops and endless discussions spawned by it. But do you really KNOW how to interpret the non-verbal messages that other people broadcast on a continual basis in their interactions with you? There are two levels of communication that occur in any interaction: content process Content refers to what we SAY.Process refers to EVERYTHING ELSE that occurs. Interactions can be wrought with mixed signals- saying one thing and non-verbally communicating another. No wonder so many singles report confusion regarding what their date was really thinking or feeling. On the surface, understanding this language can seem very difficult, if not impossible. Not so, if you learn to speak the non-verbal language of process. The following tips will be presented using examples of naturally (and commonly) reported dating scenarios experienced by singles. 1. Good eye contact/ poor eye contact When you are sitting and talking with your date, do you notice how they look at you, when you or they are speaking? When their eye contact is good, this is a sign that they feel comfortable and interested in you. They are really involved in the interaction and want to be there. It also communicates honesty and sincerity.Conversely, when your date has difficulty making eye contact, this communicates discomfort; lack of interest or it could be extreme shyness. The last would be easy to know if they are a shy person in general. 2. Restlessness Have you ever experienced the restless date? You know the one. He moves around in his chair, she looks at her watch, and his mind seems somewhere else. He may or may not offer an explanation. What appears to be going on is that her mind IS somewhere else. This behavior communicates a lack of interest or a preoccupation with someone or somewhere else. 3. Looking around at others a lot and not at youHave you ever had the unpleasant experience of being out with someone who watches the crowd the whole time? Perhaps, they just glance furtively (and frequently) around the room? This, of course, signals lack of interest, possible discomfort and a desire to avoid interaction with you.It can also be a general sign of someone who is not trustworthy, or at the very least, hasn’t been completely honest/ candid with you. 4. Is noticeably quietOh, how deafening is silence. It can speak volumes. If your date has little to say to you what does this mean?Maybe they are just not very interested in you.Perhaps they don’t think you would care to hear what they have to say.Maybe they think you wouldn’t appreciate hearing what they are really thinking.Perhaps they are in an off or sour mood.Only you can interpret this. Be careful not to quickly write it off to something you want it to be, as opposed to what it really is. 5. Stiffening or closed-in body posture You know what YOU do in uncomfortable situations. You fold your arms tightly across your chest. You stiffen your spineYou tightly cross your legs. You turn your body at an angle away from the person you are facingYou lean away from the person you are with Of course, the reverse is true when the interaction feels good. You lean forwardYour arms are relaxed or laying open to the personYou face the other person directlyYour posture is relaxed and at ease It’s fairly easy to interpret the closed-in posture. The other person feels uncomfortableThey aren’t open to the interaction with youThey would rather not be there If this is a first date, it will probably be the last. 6. Physical Contact Perhaps the easiest communication to read correctly is that of touch. If your date avoids taking your hand or putting his arm around you he may be uncomfortable or unsure. He may also be shy, but you would already know that. If someone you have been dating for a while begins to exhibit changes in their level of eye contact, body posture, attention to you, availability and/or becomes restless or less communicative, pay attention. Their feelings have shifted. Be careful not to be too quick to explain it away. More than one occurrence should set off your silent alarm. Make sure that what they say matches what they don’t say. Other (non-verbal) expressions that you should listen to that can suddenly occur during the course of a dating relationship are:Calling less or not callingChange in voice toneBecoming busy and not having time to get togetherLatenessMissing dates without calling or having a plausible excuseMoodiness- irritation/impatience/anger outbursts If your date or boyfriend/girlfriend sends you any of the above (negative) signals, the best way to handle it is to comment in a direct (and gentle) way about it.Then watch for what he/she DOES while you listen to their response. This will give you all the information you need.
