Go Melons This Summer!

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Suzanne Macguire What do you do to drive the heat of the crazy summer months? Drink lots of water or gulp down loads of colas? Try something different this time by switching to some natural and fruity options! So go melons this summer and intake the benefits of watermelons in all forms. Salads or slices, juices or smoothies, watermelons are one of the healthiest alternatives to offer effective resistance against the scorching heat of the sun leaving you feeling refreshed all through. A daily workout session followed by a glass of watermelon juice is one of the simplest tips for staying fit. You might ask the reason for choosing watermelons when so many fruits are on offer. The answer is, watermelons are the only natural food that provide essential vitamins without any extra calories. They are rich in lycopene, a nonprovitamin carotenoid, having up to twice the antioxidant capacity of beta-carotene in vitro. Its this carotenoid that lends colors like orange, yellow and red to the fruits and vegetables. Researches suggest that lycopene may serve to be effective against certain cancers and other cardiovascular disease. Watermelons are a refreshing source of energy. Be it the hot summer months or a tiring day, a glass of watermelon juice is sure to pep up your spirits and rehydrate your body. Our body loses a lot of fluids during summer and it’s highly essential for this loss to be compensated. Drinking water is of course necessary but having a glass of cool watermelon juice or a slice itself helps the body to develop enough resistance against heat. People who like to experiment with their foods can try out different recipes with watermelons. Fruit salads, watermelon desserts, or watermelon drinks can be prepared with a lot of variations. In China, watermelons are stir-fried, stewed or even pickled. Watermelon seeds form one of the commonest snacks in the Chinese market and compete well with sunflower seeds. To top it all, the seeds are even pressed for oil for the preparation of a West African soup called the egusi soup. Without doubt, watermelons offer us numerous options to try out different recipes that are tasty and nutritious as well. Relatively low in fats, a slice of watermelon can thus form a primary component of a person’s diet. Rich in vitamins A, C and B6, they are also a great source of potassium but extremely low in sodium. So follow the nature’s way and turn to watermelons this summer. Let your taste buds enjoy its crispy succulence that leaves you craving for more. But ‘more’ here can only mean merrier and healthier as well! Thai Kickboxing Lessons Really Kicked My Butt

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Yoshi Kundagawa I’m totally serious about getting in shape. With at least30 pounds to lose, I’m one of the fatter tubs of lard atthe gym, but this week I’m not the most out of shape. Twoguys have come to today’s muay thai kickboxing lesson thateasily are 50 pounds overweight. One is tall, and one is short. But they are both shapedlike Anjou pears. They are sweaty and wheezing before theclass even starts. We warm up with skipping rope. I am horrible at skippingrope. It’s only been 3 weeks that I have been takingthai kickboxing lessons, and my technique would have a 3rdgrade schoolkid howling. The jump rope is plastic coveredand it hurts my toes when I wack them every fourth or fifthskip. I see some of the more experienced kickboxers canskip on one foot or even alternate feet. Something tolook forward to I guess. To my surprise the little fat guy can skip better than Ican. His taller counterpart is already dripping withperspiration, his Judas Priest t-shirt is drenched. Whenwe stop skipping and move onto burpees, jumping squatsand hillclimbers, he calls it a day. Today we are learning elbow strikes. This is a very dangerous drill, even at slow mow. If you clip a guy inthe eyebrow with your elbow, he’s looking at five to tenstitches, easily. The Kru, or teacher, shows us a lethal technique he calls”Breaking The Elephants Tusk”. Imagine a guy punching atyour face, you ducking to one side, then ramming the tipof your elbow down full speed into his bicep. Crazy stuffman…if I had known this as a kid my buddies in highschool would never have picked on me. Of course they’d bein hospital and I would have been in Juvenile Lockup. The 60 minute session ends with abdominal work…oh my godthe pain! The entire front sheet of muscle and flab onmy body is on fire. Another great muay thai kickboxinglesson has come to an end. I feel exhausted but amazing. What’s really amazing is how well I sleep at night andhow well I go to the bathroom. I’ll leave that storyfor another day! Have You Tried Everything and Still Feel Sick and Tired? The Benefits of Reflexology

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD Western medicine ideology is rooted in the language used by doctors and researchers. Their choice of words reveals their belief systems and the models they use to understand the way they think medicine works. Western medicine perceives the human body as a battleground on which wars are waged against invaders and tumors. What they fail to realize is that diseases are not separate from the person. In fact every disease can be more accurately called an expression of the patient’s lifestyle, beliefs, and energies. Cancer is not a tumor, for example: it is a systemic disorder that can only truly be cured by helping to support the body, not by attacking it with chemical bombs. The tumor is merely one physical expression of the systemic disorder, and simply removing the tumor does nothing to cure the disease. Western medicine’s approach to cancer has focused on getting rid of the physical symptoms — cutting out tumors with sharp instruments or attempting to shrink tumors with chemotherapy. But a critical analysis of these methodologies shows that treating tumors does little or nothing to actually improve the quality of life or the lifespan of cancer patients. The body is designed to heal itself provided it has the proper support to do its job. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is based on a concept of balanced qi (pronounced “chee”), or vital energy, that is believed to flow throughout the body. Qi is proposed to regulate a person’s spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical balance and to be influenced by the opposing forces of yin (negative energy) and yang (positive energy). Disease is proposed to result from the flow of qi being disrupted and yin and yang becoming imbalanced. Among the components of TCM are herbal and nutritional therapy, restorative physical exercises, meditation, acupuncture, and remedial massage. Body malfunction, stress, injury or dis-ease, is the result of the body being in a state of chemical and neurological imbalance, and vital energy pathways are blocked, which prevents the body from functioning effectively. Reflexology is an effective method to restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium and encourages healing. The practice of Reflexology has been around for thousands of years. Reflexology is a holistic non-invasive therapy that helps restore and maintain the body’s natural state of equilibrium and facilitate healing. In reflexology, the feet, hands and ears are viewed as mirror images of the body, with reflexes corresponding to every part and organ of the body. Stimulating these reflexes encourages natural healing. Reflexology is beneficial for all ages. Effects of Reflexology Reflex treatment helps to clean the organism by stimulating the natural emunctories : intestines, kidneys, lungs, sinuses, skin Reflexology is under the Hering law (American homeopathe): “The natural healing of organ malfunctions, seen through symptoms which evolve from the interior to the exterior, from above to below and from the present towards the past.” In this way cures for elimination attacks can be established the next day or shortly thereafter which are of either a physical or psycho-emotional order. These treatments are followed by a great vitality and relaxation. Benefits: Reduced stress and deep relaxation, Improved circulation, Improved elimination of toxins, Revitalized energy, Stregthens immune system, Creation of an overall state of wellness, Restoration of the body’s equilibrium, Restoration of the natural functioning of all systems, Preventative health care Common ailments relieved: Headaches, Migraines Arthritis, Bronchitis, Back pain, Heart problems, Blood Pressure reduced, Chronic Pain reduced, Better Sleep/No Insomnia, Fatigue, Diabetes, Indigestion, Sciatica, PMS, Asthma What to expect when you visit a Reflexologist: A regular session lasts for about 60 minutes, with the first session being slightly longer since a thorough case history questionnaire is required. The interview takes about 15 to 20 minutes depending on the client’s condition and the indications for Reflexology. The client remains fully clothed throughout the session. Dorothy M. Your Greatest Marketing Assets

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Kevin P. Dervin You might not think that you are a marketing and sales person, but if you own or work in a small business think again. When you’re in business for yourself - whether you like it or not, feel like you’re good at it or not - you are a marketing and sales person. I tell my marketing clients and those that attend my various marketing presentations all the time that the two greatest assets you posses are your Attitude and Belief. When these are positive and show through your marketing and sales efforts, your results will increase dramatically. Attitude: Be enthusiastic and passionate about your value proposition to the marketplace. You know that what you offer can make a difference and have an impact on your clients. When it comes to your own marketing, if you feel good about yourself and you have self-confidence because you are doing everything for the benefit of your clients, you’ll become more attractive to prospective clients. Belief: You don’t have to have a degree in marketing to get great marketing results. But you do have to believe in yourself and your actions. I call it a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you believe that can’t do something, you’re right - you won’t do it. On the other hand, if you believe that you can learn what it takes to get better marketing results you will. If you’re persistent in pursuing your business and your small business marketing with a positive attitude and belief that you can, sooner or later you’ll find what works for you. You’ll discover the marketing strategies and tactics that allow you to begin attracting attention and bringing in new clients consistently! I know because it’s happening for me. B2B Marketing - Why it Should be Subtle

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

By Stuart Ayling Subtle adj. Showing or making, or capable of showing or making, fine distinctions of meaning. How many times have you been told that: great marketing has to be “off the wall”; your message really needs to “knock-out” your audience; you have to be loud to stand out from the crowd. Consumer marketing tactics are frequently about big-budget, high-impact campaigns. But if you’re selling services to other businesses you might want to consider a different approach. Often it’s the subtle message that makes a difference. Not one that’s really loud, but one that really hits the mark with the audience. Sometimes you need to fine tune your marketing message in subtle ways to make a bigger impact. The sort of subtleness I’m talking about could be: * Using industry specific terminology in messages. * Using the right tone of ‘voice’ in communications. * Participating in the most appropriate trade events. * Providing information that demonstrates insights into client problems. * Recognising key phrases during the sales process and responding specifically to them. * Talking about results in terms the particular reader/listener will understand. You should think about the benefits of preparing different versions of your standard promotional message. Pay attention to the specific audience of the particular marketing activity you are implementing. Subtleness = Understanding. Clients will recognise your understanding of their situation or industry and you will be viewed as a specialist. A strong benefit of this approach is that - as a specialist - you can avoid being perceived as a commodity. Consequently you are in a much stronger position to close the sale without being pressured into price concessions. For example, on a web site describe your services in different ways to appeal to different types of clients. If you need a brochure to use with a variety of client types, consider segmenting the information so you can demonstrate benefits in a relevant way. The key is to pay attention to the little things that make a big difference. A great article on how email messages can be customised in subtle ways can be found here. This subtle approach can easily be used in personal presentations. You may have one “30 second introduction” or “elevator pitch” that you use at a general business networking event. You could also have another version of your introduction to use at a meeting of colleagues within your own industry. Take up the challenge to be subtle. It works. Drafting of the Arson Watch Plan for USDA Forest Service

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By Lance Winslow About six years ago my company got a call from the USDA Forest Service Research and Development Center in San Dimas, CA about bidding on a contract to build specialized sprayers. Since we were in the Mobile Car Wash Franchising Industry they thought we might be able to help out and put together a few small units, which would be on every vehicle. These sprayers would have two uses. One was to clean the undercarriages on the bottom of the vehicles as they left the dirt onto pavement for the noxious weed program. It prevents seeds from weeds etc from moving from forest to forest and hitching a ride. The second use would be to flood out smoldering campfires, which were left or put out tiny fires from lightning. I got to talking with the procurement officer and found they did not have an arson program in place. Since it is part of our corporate mission to assist in efforts to help communities we drafted a report and Business Plan Proposal for a Neighborhood Arson Watch Program for the forestry service. The USDA Forest Service requested a submission of a plan after we mentioned it to them, so we delivered. I remember staying up all night working on it the last day before it was submitted. We had been working with the USDA Forest Service Research and Development Center in San Dimas, CA. on a completely different project the USDAFS is considering is using Car Wash Guys Equipment to clean the bottoms of vehicles leaving sensitive eco-systems within the forestry jurisdiction. Clearing the weeds off the bottoms of trucks and other vehicles, which go off road will prevent the spreading of pathogens like the one infecting the Old Redwoods in CA. By cleaning the bottoms of vehicles they hope to keep the pathogen from spreading to the nearby Sierra Nevada Mountain Ranges. This pathogen has jumped species of trees already and is threatening the Old Wood Mature Forest Areas and must be stopped. That is how the drafting of the Neighborhood Mobile Arson Watch came from a guy who washes cars. If you live in an area, which is in the foothills or near a forest and you want to protect your community and town from fire, you can download my free 21-Page E-Book and take it to your next town hall meeting. I give this freely to you, without copyright, you may copy it, modify it as long as you use it to help people. Due to the bureaucracy the Arson Plan is generally run from the private sector. The USDS Forest Service is under tremendous financial pressures and staffing issues. But the plan we wrote is simple and easy to use and it is free to you and your community; use this web address for your free copy: http://www.lancewinslow.org/arsonwatch.pdf “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. First Responder Human Hibernation Units

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Lance_Winslow] Lance Winslow In the next few years paramedics, first responders and military medics will have instant hibernation devices. These devices will come in small canisters of the gas to slow the body down after replacing lost blood and/or stopping bleeding. The replacement blood will be synthetic and coagulate faster to seal the wounds and once this happens the victim of the injury will be given hibernation gas. This gas will put the person in temporary suspended animation. When multiple victims are around each person will be administered the hibernation gas as the available first responders work thru the victims in order of most injured and serious first. The gas used may be hydrogen sulfide, which in high concentrations can be a deadly toxin, but in the proper ratio will merely cause induced hibernation. Mark Roth and a team of medical researchers have proved concept by putting mice into hibernation similar to bears. Their mammalian bodies were slowed by 90% and the possibilities for this method for saving people are truly endless. Imagine the benefits to the saving of lives in automobile accidents, train wrecks, bus crashes or airliners running off the end of a runway in a ball of fire? Imagine in a severe Hurricane, Earthquake or other natural disaster? This is a super break thru in medical research and must receive full funding for all applications and problems it might solve in the future on our elliptical traveling pale blue dot. “Lance Winslow” - Online [http://www.WorldThinkTank.net/wttbbs/] Think Tank forum board. Collagen and Its Role In Cosmetics

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Katrina VanDoran What Is Skin Collagen? Short Answer: A fibrous protein found in skin, bone, cartilage, tendon, and other connective tissues. The main structural component of the lower layer of the skin (Dermis) is a protein called collagen. Bundles of collagen molecules pack together throughout the dermis, accounting for three-fourths of the dry weight of skin. Collagen is also responsible for the skins strength. Collagen is produced by cells called fibroblasts, which are found scattered throughout the dermis. Collagen is a connective tissue and is the cement that holds everything together-the primary mortar between the bricks of all of our smooth muscle tissues such as blood vessels, digestive tract, heart, gallbladder, kidneys and bladder, to mention just a few. Collagen, along with elastin, is a key structural component of bones, cartilage, tendons, the skin, lung tissue and blood vessels. Collagen provides structure and firmness to body tissues, while elastin provides flexibility to those same tissues. As aging occurs, cellular proteins hook together or change shape. These changes keep the proteins from doing their jobs properly resulting in a loss of collagen and less firmness to body tissues. This process eventually leads to wrinkles. Thus, one important target of wrinkle prevention and elimination regimen is to reduce collagen breakdown and increase its supply. This task is achievable but you have to go about it in the right way. Everyday your skin is exposed to environmental elements such as sunlight and air pollution. These elements cause free radicals to form in the skin, which attacks the collagen layer. This process prematurely ages and damages skin, resulting in everything from fine lines and wrinkles to loss of elasticity and hyperpigmentation. This process is known as photo-aging. First, vitamin C is essential for the synthesis of collagen , a key structural protein of the skin. Adding vitamin C to a culture of skin cells (fibroblasts) dramatically increases the synthesis of collagen. Secondly, vitamin C is an antioxidant and can help reduce skin damage caused by free radicals. So, when vitamin C is properly delivered to skin cells, there is a good chance to reduce wrinkles and improve skin texture. Action C products provide anti-oxidant protection from environmental damage. Using face creams with vitamin C and Collagen will stimulate skin cells to produce collagen and can partly reverse this process. Stimulating collagen synthesis in aged skin was shown to reduce wrinkles and improve skin texture. Please keep in mind that taking large amounts of vitamin C orally is of little benefit for reducing wrinkles because you cannot orally obtain high enough concentration of vitamin C in the skin to notably increase collagen production. Action C Skincare is an exclusive 25% Vitamin C based skincare system, containing Aceromine, a natural Vitamin C derived from the Acerola fruit. Acerola is one of the richest sources of Vitamin C in the world. In addition, Acerola contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Niacin, Beta Carotene and minerals. All five products are non-abrasive and gently exfolliate to peel away dead skin cells, revealing a new and more beautiful complexion. Continued use of Action C products will improve the overall health and appearance of your skin, not only now, but also long into the future. Colos Cream Egalisante (Collagen Cream) contains vegetable collagen from the leaves and fruits of the Australian Acacia Tree. Beware of products that contain native collagen as these are animal derivatives.
