Don’t Be Blind - Learn Blind Date Tips

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Lawrence Andrews There is no need to make a person swear off of blind dates forever just because one didnt work out well. Here are some tips on how to prevent a blind date from becoming a disaster. 1. Snoop around a bit. Don’t go to a blind date without having any hint as to what kind of person you are about to entrust your one evening with. A little bit of planning will go a long way toward having a successful blind date. Talk on the phone. Email each other. Do those mild background checking techniques that will make you less worrisome when the actual date happens. 2. Go for a casual date. It is never cool to plan like you are about to make a marriage proposal when you are just about to go to a blind date. A cozy caf or park that allows lots of conversation and exchange of ideas will do the trick. 3. First impressions last forever. Blind dates should be informal. However, that doesn’t mean you are allowed to show up in your gym clothes. Overdressing is overkill, too. Women, any suggestive outfit should be saved for your fifth or sixth date if you click. Men, keep your bowties and suits reserved for your wedding. It would be wise to show your personal taste as long as you strike a good balance. 4. Know your manners. A blind date could still go bad no matter how you prepare for it. It is just the way of nature telling you that the chemistry is just not there. But the lack of spark during the first date does not necessarily translate to never clicking with the person. It could be that it is just a bad day for the two of you or the weather is simply not cooperating. Keeping an open mind will avoid you from sulking about how bad your date went. Don’t forget to respect your date as you would like to be respected. Don’t be too rigid, have fun. By James Hegarty Million of high school seniors who would like to further the education are normally hampered by one major factor, funds. College these days is an expensive proposition and not many people can afford the cost of a four or even two year college. This can be a headache but luckily there is a solution to this headache for millions of teenagers. The solution is using federal student loans. Student loans are loans provided by the federal government and some private institutions which have low interest and with payments which can be deferred until after graduation. These loans are provided regardless of an individuals credit worthiness. These loans are deigned to assist students pay for either undergraduate or graduate education. Job Search - 6 Tips to Boost Your Campaign

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Dale Kurow Does your job search feel like a big weight on your shoulders? Are you confused about what you should do next? Do you have starts and stops in your search activities? Are you beating yourself up because you havent done enough? Okay, first things first. Conducting a job search can be overwhelming under the best of circumstances. Add to that a full time job, kids and/or other pressing responsibilities, and it gets even trickier. And the higher you are on the food chain, the longer it takes to find your next position. On top of all those pressures, are you making things worse by what youre telling yourself? Clients beat themselves up because they dont feel up to the task. Theres too much information and they dont know where to start, so they do little and then give up. Or they berate themselves because they havent done enough. Time for a reality check! Here are some tips to keep it real: Set realistic standards and expectations. If you have locked-in time commitments (full-time job, kids, etc.), you need to be extra careful in planning your activities. Set weekly goals that you can comfortably meet. Under-promise and then, if you do more, youll be happy with your progress. Learn to wait gracefully. Do you want it all now? Ahhh, if only. . . Deal with your impatience! The older I get, the more I realize the importance of being patient. Nothing happens overnight. All those folks who made it big spent years building, waiting and never giving up. Allow your career plan the time it needs to unfold. Have a plan. Before you take step one, what are your career goals? A new job? Positioning yourself for promotion? Whats your timetable? I cant stress enough the importance of a written plan. That way youll see the steps you need to take, can check off your accomplishments, and keep track of your progress. Remember to celebrate your wins. Dont put the cart before the horse. Can you compellingly and succinctly describe what you want? Dont expect people (recruiters, your networking contacts, friends, etc.) to connect the dots. Until you can easily articulate the kind of job you want and what youd like to be doing, networking will be a wasted opportunity. Write a resume only after you are clear about your job goals. I get calls from prospective clients saying, I need a new resume. After a few minutes of conversation, they admit theyre unsure of their next career move. They expect a new resume to replace the pre-work they havent done. Your resume should reflect your carefully thought out career objective. Find a committed listener and have them hold you accountable. You will accomplish more and feel better if you have a trusted friend to talk to on a consistent basis. This person can be a sounding board and can give you support when you hit a speed bump. We spend our lives trying to reach our goals. Yet, the time we actually spend reveling in our achievement is minimal. Arent you always thinking about the next thing you want? By accepting that your job search is a process that happens over time, you give yourself permission to relax and enjoy whats in front of you today. How to Suggestive Sell Your Gift Certificates

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Ron Wilkinson Gift Certificates can be a great revenue producer during the entire year, but your purchases will really increase around Birthdays and Holidays especially prior to Christmas. It is a great idea to feature this gift certificate sale right after Thanksgiving. December can be the busiest month of the year if you effectively handle gift certificates. Let me tell you about a good promotion. If you purchase a minimum increment of a $100.00 in gift certificates between Thanksgiving and the first of the year, you will receive a $20.00 Bonus Guest Certificate FREE. This twenty dollar bonus is a great way to boost your December sales. Some restrictions apply to the Bonus Guest Certificates. The Bonus Guest Certificates are only good from January 1st until March 31st and cannot be redeemed for cash. This is designed to drive your business on the first three months of the year which are traditionally three slow months. This promotion brings business in during this slow time and it encourages and drives the sales of gift certificates during December and a minimum of $100.00 increases the transaction size. Those Customers who used to spend $50.00 or $75.00 on gift certificates now spend $100.00 and then get $120.00 / $20.00 of which must be spent after the first of the year and before March 31st. You may think that this is a big discount, giving a $20.00 ADDED Bonus Guest Certificate. But, you need to understand that ultimately 50% of the Guest Certificates do not get redeemed. The 16.66% discount amounts to only about 8% because not all of these Guest Certificates get used. The sales results will be very impressive. You can promote the sale of gift certificates through your newsletter and through posters tastefully done in the Restaurant and on your website. If you have 10,000 customers and only 1% participated in the purchase of gift certificates at the minimum purchase of $100.00, this would be $12,000 in purchases. If you could enjoy a 10% return, it would be $120,000. Putting a dedicated table in the entryway of the Restaurant would make it an easy way for your Guests to purchase the gift certificates and take the job away from an already busy staff. The sole responsibility of this Employee would be to sell the gift certificates. This would be a great temptation for your Guests to purchase while they are visiting your Restaurant. You would put the gift certificates in a nice gift envelope for the Customers, according to the dominations they want (i.e. $20.00). The key to increasing and pushing the sales of Gift Certificates is through outstanding dining experiences. If the Guest feels good about their dining experience and they see a table display sign like the one below, sales of gift certificates will soar during December. One Restaurant location, after putting in the dedicated table, increased their Gift Certificate business by 37% for the first year and then an additional 6% the very next year. This has been a big boost to gift certificate sales. This has also dramatically increased the sales for the first quarter of the next year through the Guest Certificate. The redemption on the bonus Guest certificates was only about 50% which puts your discount of 16.66% to 8.33%. If the Gift Certificates were given in $20.00 amounts it means that you would bring in five parties from the $100.00 sale. Bonus Discount - The Bonus Guest Certificate only has a three month life. This is a very simple promotion and it works. By and large, the people who buy the gift certificates are loyal Customers and it gives you the opportunity to reward their patronage. The Bonus Guest Gift Certificate is a different size and color than the regular Gift Certificate. Regular Gift Certificates can be $20/$25/$50/$75 or $100.00 amounts. If the Guest did not have a preference, I would give them 5 - $20.00 Gift Certificates for $100.00 and 1 - $20.00 Guest Certificate . Any denominations can be combined to make the $100.00 special and then receive $120.00 worth of value. The redemption rate on regular gift certificates are about 80%, therefore 20% are not redeemed, while only 50% of the Guest Certificates are redeemed and they must be redeemed before 31st March the next year. Gift certificates are the perfect solution for any special occasion. From celebrating birthdays, graduations and weddings to inspiring higher business performance, gift certificates are always a delight to receive. If you are unsure what to get for a person but you know what restaurant they like then Gift Certificates is the way to go. Ideas For Wedding Reception Table Arrangements You Want To Know

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Amy Spade The trick with making floral arrangements for your reception and other areas is that you need to have either some advice or some professional help. Looking in bridal magazines and in floral magazines is all well and good, but those are pictures of no-budget arrangements. You, on the other hand, cant necessarily spend your entire budget on the flowers. On the tables At your reception is where the majority of the flowers will go. Each of the tables, as well as the head table, will need a variety of arrangements to add color and style. And while there really arent any rules for what arrangements you can have, you will want to keep a few things in mind. If youre thinking about what kinds of arrangements to put on the head table, think about what pictures will be taken there. If your arrangements are so complicated that they will be distracting in a photo, then you may want to rethink your plans. Again, a florist can help you out with this kind of logistic problem, especially if theyre local. Many will already have experience in any reception hall, so they know what they need to do. And for your guest, though large floral arrangements can look great in the reception hall, you have to consider that they will be sitting down at one point. Having larger floral arrangements blocking their view of the other side of the table or of the dance floor or head table is not a very good setup. Think about where your guests will be sitting and what they will be able to see. They may have brought cameras to take pictures themselves, so you dont want to hinder their view. Ideas you can use When it comes to creating drama and yet realistic floral arrangements, you will want to think about the height above all (no pun intended). A newer trend in floral arrangements is to have tall, think vases with a few stems of flowers in each, creating a larger bouquet at the top of the vase. This looks like a garden from the overall perspective, while giving your guests the ability to talk to each other. On the other hand, you may also choose floral arrangements that are lower to the table. Some couples like to choose a combination of floating flowers and candles to add a little warmth to a table. And they also serve as conversation pieces as well. Floral arrangements dont have to come from bridal magazines or shows in order to be useful at your wedding. Look around and see what kinds of arrangements can be done. Talk to florists about what you need and see what they suggest. Giving in “Just a Little” to Cravings Does Not Work - Do this First!

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By Eunice Coughlin How many of you have read this dieting adviceif you eat just one or two small bites of (insert favorite snack here), you will satisfy your hunger and be able to stay on your dietNot! This is actually true for a minority of people but a special condition needs to exist before you arrive at a place where one little taste will satisfy and you can stop eating. For the rest of us, its all about fighting the urge to ingest an entire bag of potato chips, or chocolate chip cookies or butter pecan ice cream once we open the package. Just one little taste could send us over the edge; our emotions take over and we just cant stop ourselves until its all gone. We figure that if we eat it all now, it cant keep calling us from the pantry or freezer. And well never buy that evil food again. You and I know thats a lie. So how to stop the cravings? You have to begin with the root of the problem. Believe it or not, when your body begins its cycle of cravings, its actually calling out for nutrition. Your body needs something that is contained in the food you are eating; that something is energy. But because its a quick fix full of empty calories, the energy you get from eating junk isnt pure and it doesnt last long. You know it and your body does, too. Plus, the pure physical pleasure from eating something that satisfies your taste buds (ooh, the smooth texture of chocolate, the salty crunch of potato chips, the sweet bliss of ice cream) makes it difficult to stop. Oh, sure, nutrition. I just need to eat fruit when I get cravings, then, right? Wrong! That doesnt work either and you know why? Because its too little, too late. You have to start way back with what youre eating every day. Unfortunately, eating fruits and vegetables does not guarantee that you are getting all the nutrition you need to be healthy. For one thing, there are certain minerals that you cant get from your food; you must take them in your body somehow. Plus, the fruits and vegetables we get in our grocery stores today, even organic ones, dont have the nutrition that it should because our farming soil has been so depleted from over-production. Well, okay, you say Ill just take a supplement. Well, unfortunately, your body can only absorb at best 10% of the nutrients that are in traditional pill supplements because of the way they are made. One alternative that is gaining popularity is to take a liquid vitamin supplement but they are not created equal either. For a liquid vitamin supplement to be absorbed properly, it has to be produced in a certain way for the body to absorb it. There are some liquid vitamin and mineral supplements in the marketplace that are readily absorbed by your bodys cells. Do your research thoroughly and pick the one thats right for you. So how does this affect cravings for diet busters like chocolate, ice cream and potato chips? If your body is getting the nutrition it needs, your body is “craving” the right foods anyway and your cells work properly. As a result, you will always have a store of clean, pure energy available and cravings dont happen. If they do, yes, you can have one simple bite or two of your favorite guilty pleasure and stop with no problem. You will have control of your food. Learn How to Go Beyond Mere Numbers in Cost/Benefit Analysis With Mind Mapping

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By Vj Mariaraj Cost/Benefit analysis is a well-known technique that is widely used in any business transaction. From simple to large project management Cost/Benefit analysis is resorted to assess the full financial implications of a business operation. As the name implies, Cost/Benefit analysis is adding up the value of benefits arising from implementation and subtracting the costs associated with the process. Invariably, costs are either one-off deal or recurrent. However, benefits are often experienced after a minimum period of time. This time is built into the Cost/Benefit analysis as payback period, when the benefits start accruing, repaying for the costs incurred. Most companies set a specific period such as 3-years to gauge results. In its basic form, Cost/Benefit analysis involves weighing the financial costs and benefits - for e.g., a company deciding to provide office transport instead of offering transport allowance. In such a process the company would work out the cost of hiring transport or buying appropriate mode of transport for safe return of employees versus individual payment passed on as transport allowance to the employees. It would however not measure the satisfactory levels of the employees, the loyalty factor it could accrue to the company, the punctuality it would ensure and the teaming and bonding that the travel could bring among the employees. These are the intangible benefits for which there are no numerical value assigned. In project management, Cost/Benefit analysis invariably takes a major share of the process. In fact, no project is undertaken without it, as unless benefits outweigh the costs, the need for incurring costs in the first place is rendered meaningless. This is how most financial transactions are worked through, excluding of course the political ones. In the usual Cost/Benefit there is no scope for incorporating intangible disadvantages and benefits. However, intangibles such as emotional satisfaction, environmental concerns and long-term future consequences are vital to the success of any financial transaction. This is exactly where Mind Maps can score above the mere Cost/Benefit analysis. After thoroughly assessing the financial implications of a business transaction or a process, it is vital that an exhaustive appraisal of the often-neglected intangible elements, are factored in to provide a complete comprehensiveness to the process. Mind Maps help you to explore these aspects scrupulously and systematically. By looking at issues in all their widest aspects, Mind Maps help you to prepare for contingencies and address them effectively, and also to see the links between them. Apart from providing a careful understanding of the whole issue, they could provide new opportunities and avenues for further action or growth hitherto unseen. As you gain the full picture, you will be able to see the associations between various tangible and intangible elements, and to find creative approaches and solutions. That is why Mind Maps can be a useful device to help you charter into unknown territories. While Cost/Benefit analysis derives its numerical value, Mind Maps go beyond it to bring in the deeper, underlying causative and emotional factors. They help in rendering wholesomeness to the process and provide the highest mental satisfaction. Hence, using Mind Maps indeed has a psychological advantage. You could learn about them and gauge for yourself. About the Author: Dr. Vj Mariaraj is a Mind Map enthusiast and has been using Mind Maps for the past twelve years.
